Why is Fordham called Fordham?
St. John’s College officially became Fordham University on March 7, 1907. The name Fordham refers to the village of Fordham, in which the original Rose Hill campus is located. The village, in turn, drew its name from its location near a shallow crossing of the Bronx River (“ford by the hamlet”).

When John Hughes, coadjutor bishop (later archbishop) of New York, established Fordham as St. John’s College on June 24, 1841, he considered it a “daring and dangerous undertaking”—not least because he initially lacked the funds to purchase the land where he saw a great university taking root. But he persevered.
When did Fordham become coed?

In 1907, after the recent addition of a law school and medical school, the name was changed to Fordham University; St. John’s College became Fordham College. After remaining a men’s college for 133 years, Fordham College merged with Thomas More College for women in 1974, becoming coeducational.

When is the University closed for Memorial Day?
The University will be closed from May 28th through May 31st in observance of Memorial Day. There will be no service on these days. The University will be closed on June 18th in observance of Juneteenth. There will be no service on this day. Monday through Thursday: there will be two vans for every trip until the evening.
